Submission of thesis was at the end of September but here I am just making a closing line to my blog. Marking the end of my thesis. I did not attempt to include my interpretation of finding in blog but instead left it for my thesis.
In summary my thesis described three experiments. It was a qualitative study that attempted to find how sound affected children while doing a task on an interactive surface.
One advantage of qualitative study is that there is the prospect of alternative explanations. In a qualitative analysis, because it draws on the interpretive skills of the researcher, it opens up the possibility of more than on explanation being valid. Rather than a presumption that there must be, in theory at least, one correct explanation. It allows for the possibility that different researchers might reach different conclusions, despite using broadly the same methods.
Also "there is tolerance of ambiguity and contradictions. To the extent that social existence involves uncertainty, accounts of that existence ought to be able to tolerate ambiguities an contradictions and qualitative research is better able to do this than quantitative research"
Maykut and Morhouse (1994) cited in Denscombe (2003)
One disadvantage of qualitative research is that researcher's own identity back ground and beliefs have a role in creation of data and the analysis of data. The research is self-aware.
I tried to avoid any bias or having a one-sided report by having another observer who gave an interpretation of the observation.
